On to Austria

On the lamppost outside Schloss Thynne is the familiar scallop symbol of the pilgrimage route to Santaiago de Compostella in Northern Spain. If you don't about this see here .The thought of people walking from Stuttgart to Spain on pilgrimage is astonishing but they came from much further…..I note that those cute hoors from Galway took the ferry and saved on the walking. Probably had a party on the boat with the duty free too..;-)

A beautiful start to the journey as I set off to get through Austria and maybe as far as Italy. A nice sunny 23C at the start became a muggy overcast 28C by mid afternoon which is crap conditions for taking pictures. I headed for Schloss Ludwig near Fussen in the Bavarian Alps. I had seen the promotional pictures and thought this in one not to miss. This is the castle that inspired the Walt Disney sleeping beauty fairytale castle on the logo. I was completely and utterly disappointed. Crap visibility and most of the castle was wrapped in plastic for repairs. Bummer….will have to come back again someday. Check here for a proper look at the castle.

Decided to take the advice of a German father and son biker pair that I met in Ypres and try to go over the Timmelsjoch pass to Italy and headed off south. This would bring me past Solden ski resort where I went skiing earlier this year. Nice windy mountain roads with literally thousands of cars and bikes with german registrations all going the other direction…thank God. Got to the head of the valley to see a sign that the pass over to Italy is closed…it doesn't open till 4 days time….bugger. Next tried the Reschenpass to the east next to switzerland and abandoned the effort at 1900. Not smart to start climbing mountains with failing light. Maybe this trip is a little easy in the year, there is a lot of visible snow on the peaks.

In hindsight( with a beer and the weatherforecast in front of me, that was a mistake…..I will have to do it tomorrow in the rain. Bugger. This is starting to feel a lot like last time in round in Norway….except a bit warmer with bigger crowds everywhere.
